FAQs

What style of Mahjong does this community play?

Our group focuses specifically on Hong Kong Old Style (HKOS) Mahjong. Matches emphasize traditional fan scoring rules, points play (tracked via tally sticks or scoring chips), and structured table placements. We do not currently host games for Taiwanese, Japanese Riichi, or American Mahjong variants, though HKOS players of all experience levels are welcome.

Is there any gambling or money involved?

No. Our community operates strictly for social, cultural, and recreational gameplay. We use tally sticks, point chips, or mobile scoring apps to track points and hand values purely for competitive placement and skill progression. Illegal gambling or real-money wagering is strictly prohibited at all community-organized tables and events.

How does the skill assessment work?

When you register, we ask a few quick questions about your familiarity with HKOS fundamentals, such as recognizing tile suits, calculating basic vs. advanced fan thresholds, and your preferred table speed. We use these responses to route you to compatible tables so everyone has an enjoyable game.

Can I host a table at my apartment or private space?

Yes, community members can register as private table hosts! When filling out the host interest form, you can specify your neighborhood, table setup (e.g., standard table vs. dedicated Mahjong mat/machine), maximum guest capacity, and any household preferences. Private host details are shared only with confirmed, matched players.

What should I bring to a game night?

Just bring yourself and your enthusiasm for the game! All essential equipment, including tile sets, wind indicators, and chips is provided by the event or table host. If you have a favorite lucky tile set or mat you’d like to showcase, feel free to coordinate with your host in advance.

What is the table etiquette regarding sportsmanship?

We expect all players to treat host venues, equipment, and fellow tablemates with respect. This includes handling tiles with care, keeping conversations inclusive, maintaining steady play without rushing others unnecessarily, and respecting host venue guidelines (such as outside food policies).
